If you're facing a British Gas meter mix-up that leads to incorrect billing, you're not alone. This article explains how to identify the problem, protect your finances, and demand proper compensation from your energy supplier.
What Causes a British Gas Meter Mix-Up?
New housing developments often assign temporary plot numbers during construction. These can be registered to the wrong address on the national database, causing meters to be linked to the wrong homes. British Gas confirmed that in some cases, meters of an entire estate are mixed up, leading to residents being billed for each other's energy.

FAQ
What should I do if British Gas mixed up my meter?
Immediately report the error to British Gas and request a correction on the national database. Keep records of all correspondence and escalate to the Energy Ombudsman if needed.
Can British Gas increase my tariff for cancelling a direct debit?
Yes, many suppliers offer a discount for paying by direct debit. If you cancel it due to a meter mix-up, you may lose that discount. Request a goodwill adjustment or ask for a direct debit guarantee.

You may receive compensation for any data breach or overpayment. British Gas offered the reader in this case compensation for bank details being sent to the developer. Request at least £30–£100 for inconvenience.
