Miatta Fahnbulleh, the new UK energy secretary, faces immediate pressure over North Sea drilling decisions. As a radical economist and climate activist, her appointment signals a potential shift in energy policy.
Background and Rise to Power
Fahnbulleh, the MP for Peckham, has a background in economics and social justice. She is known for her outspoken views on the climate crisis and her support for renewable energy. Her rapid ascent to secretary of state for energy and net zero surprised many in Westminster, especially given speculation that former Labour leader Andy Burnham wanted to approve new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

Key Policy Decisions Ahead
The most immediate test is the fate of the Jackdaw and Rosebank oilfields off the coast of Scotland. These projects were already in progress when Labour took office and are not covered by the recent ban on new North Sea licences. Fahnbulleh must decide whether to approve or block these developments, a decision that her predecessor Ed Miliband called “climate vandalism.”
Challenging the Energy Security Narrative
Protesters from Fossil Free London greeted Fahnbulleh with signs reading “We’re already putting out fires, don’t start new ones.” They argue that drilling for more fossil fuels undermines the UK’s net-zero commitments. Sources close to Fahnbulleh believe she has the intellect and knowledge to challenge claims that domestic drilling enhances energy resilience.
“The reality is that the science is very clear,” said Tessa Khan of Uplift. “Burning the reserves in existing oil and gasfields will blow the global carbon budget.”
Comparison of North Sea Drilling Scenarios
| Scenario | Emissions Impact | Energy Security | Economic Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approve Rosebank & Jackdaw | High – adds 40+ million tonnes CO2 | Short-term supply boost | Jobs in oil & gas sector |
| Block new drilling | Low – aligns with net-zero | Accelerates renewables transition | Investment in green energy |
What This Means for UK Energy Policy
Fahnbulleh’s radical thinking could transform the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. She is expected to prioritise renewable energy investment, energy efficiency, and social equity. Her first months in office will be critical.
- Key takeaways from Fahnbulleh’s appointment:
- Strong emphasis on climate science and emission reduction
- Potential reversal of previous oil & gas approvals
- Increased focus on community-led energy projects
- Possible confrontation with fossil fuel lobbyists
