The Trump Saudi nuclear deal has sparked global concern, exposing a stark double standard in U.S. foreign policy that prioritizes geopolitics over non-proliferation. While Trump threatened Iran with military action for enriching uranium, he has handed Saudi Arabia the same nuclear capabilities with far fewer restrictions.
The Hypocrisy of Trump's Nuclear Policy
Trump repeatedly stated, “There will be no enrichment of uranium,” when discussing Iran. Yet his agreement with Saudi Arabia permits enrichment and reprocessing of spent fuel after a joint study. This contradiction undermines decades of U.S. efforts to limit nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

What the Saudi Deal Allows
- Uranium enrichment after a joint feasibility study
- Reprocessing of spent atomic fuel
- Exclusion of certain sites from international inspections
The lack of unfettered inspections creates a loophole that could allow Saudi Arabia to secretly develop a nuclear weapon. The crown prince has explicitly stated that if Iran builds a bomb, Saudi Arabia will too.
Comparison with the UAE Deal and the Iran Accord
| Deal | Enrichment Allowed | Inspections | Civilian Use Safeguards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trump Saudi Deal (2025) | Yes (after study) | Limited (some sites excluded) | Weak |
| UAE Deal (2009) | No | Full IAEA | Strong |
| Iran JCPOA (2015) | Limited (3.67%) | Surprise inspections | Moderate |
The Trump deal is far more permissive than the UAE’s 2009 agreement, which banned enrichment outright. This has alarmed regional allies and non-proliferation experts.
Strategic Motives Behind the Deal
Many analysts believe Trump offered Saudi Arabia this sweetheart deal to compensate for his disastrous war with Iran. Since launching airstrikes in June 2025, Iran has barred UN inspectors and accelerated enrichment. Trump’s approach has effectively rewarded Saudi ambitions while punishing Iran for the same actions.
Key Takeaways
- The deal enables Saudi uranium enrichment without robust oversight
- It contradicts Trump’s stated red lines on Iran
- It risks a nuclear arms race in the Middle East
- Israel’s existing arsenal and the Saudi crown prince’s statements add volatility
FAQ
What is the Trump Saudi nuclear deal?
The deal permits Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium and reprocess spent fuel after a joint study, with limited international inspections, raising proliferation concerns.
How does it compare to the Iran deal?
The Iran JCPOA allowed limited enrichment under strict monitoring, while the Saudi deal has weaker restrictions and fewer inspection requirements.
Could Saudi Arabia develop a nuclear weapon under this deal?
Yes, the lack of comprehensive inspections and the ability to exclude sites create a pathway to clandestine weapons development.
In summary, the Trump Saudi nuclear deal represents a dangerous pivot in U.S. non-proliferation policy. By offering Riyadh the very capabilities he denied Tehran, Trump has escalated regional tensions and weakened global norms. Stakeholders must push for transparent safeguards to prevent a new nuclear arms race.
