UK households will soon be free to install plug-in balcony solar panels from the end of August, thanks to a recent government law change. These compact solar panels can be plugged into a standard wall socket, making solar power accessible to renters and flat dwellers without rooftop space.
What Are Plug-In Balcony Solar Panels?
Also known as Balkonkraftwerk in Germany, these systems consist of one or two solar panels that connect directly to your home's electrical circuit via a three-prong plug. Unlike traditional rooftop solar arrays, they require no professional installation—just mount them on a balcony, terrace, or shed roof and plug them in.

Where to Buy Balcony Solar Panels in the UK
From 27 August, major retailers including Currys, B&Q, Asda, Screwfix, Wickes, and Amazon are expected to stock these DIY solar kits. The government has worked with industry leaders to ensure safety and reliability. Chris Hewett, CEO of Solar Energy UK, said the move will bring “cheap, clean power to households that have not been able to access these benefits before.”
How Do They Work?
When sunlight hits the panels, the generated DC electricity is converted to AC by a microinverter built into the plug. This electricity flows into your home's circuit, powering appliances and reducing the amount you draw from the grid. For safety, the system automatically shuts off if the grid goes down.
FAQ
FAQ
Do I need permission to install balcony solar panels?
In most cases, if you rent, you'll need your landlord's permission. For leaseholders, check your lease. The panels are non-permanent, so they are generally easier to approve than rooftop installations.
How much money can I save?
Typical savings range from £60 to £110 per year, depending on your location, panel orientation, and electricity usage. Even modest savings add up over the system's 20+ year lifespan.
Are balcony solar panels safe?
Yes. All kits sold by major retailers must meet UK safety standards, including the built-in microinverter that prevents backfeeding during a power cut. Always buy from reputable brands.
The legal change taking effect on 27 August marks a significant step toward democratizing solar energy in the UK. With no need for professional installation or rooftop access, millions of households can now generate their own clean, cheap electricity. Whether you live in a flat, a rented home, or simply want a low-cost entry to solar power, plug-in balcony panels offer a practical solution.
