The leaf sheep, a solar-powered sea slug, won the Invertebrate of the Year 2026 competition. This tiny creature, measuring just a grain of rice, beat out thousands of other spineless candidates in a global ballot organized by the Guardian. The competition celebrates the often-overlooked invertebrates that make up 97% of all animal species on Earth.
What Is the Leaf Sheep?
The leaf sheep (Costasiella kuroshimae) is a species of sea slug found in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific. Its name comes from its appearance, which resembles a leaf with tiny, beady eyes and a soft, green body. What makes it truly remarkable is its ability to perform photosynthesis. It feeds on algae and incorporates the chloroplasts into its own cells, effectively building solar panels that provide it with energy.

This process, called kleptoplasty, allows the leaf sheep to survive for weeks without eating, relying solely on sunlight. It is one of the few animals that can truly be called solar-powered. The broadcaster and environmental campaigner Chris Packham praised the leaf sheep, saying, "It's very, very beautiful but also very smart too. It harvests photosynthetic material from the algae it feeds upon and builds its own solar panels."
The Competition Results
The 2026 Invertebrate of the Year contest saw a much closer race than previous years, when the tardigrade and the common earthworm won by landslides. This year, the leaf sheep narrowly edged out the world's largest bumblebee, the moscardón (Bombus dahlbomii), which finished second. The giant ginger bumblebee is increasingly threatened in its native Patagonia due to invasive species introduced by humans. In third place was the horseshoe crab, a remarkable arthropod that predates the dinosaurs and has blue blood. The common woodlouse took fourth place.
| Rank | Invertebrate | Notable Feature |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leaf Sheep | Solar-powered photosynthesis |
| 2 | Moscardón Bumblebee | Largest bumblebee, threatened |
| 3 | Horseshoe Crab | Blue blood, ancient lineage |
| 4 | Common Woodlouse | Terrestrial crustacean |
The bootlace worm, one of the longest animals in the world, finished in 10th place, despite worms historically polling strongly. The competition, launched three years ago, aims to highlight the vital roles invertebrates play in ecosystems. Without them, human life would quickly perish, as they pollinate crops, filter water, recycle waste, and enrich soils.
Why Invertebrates Matter
Invertebrates are the unsung heroes of the natural world. They number at least 1.7 million described species, with millions more yet to be discovered. Their unpaid labor is essential for the survival of all life on Earth. Here are some key takeaways from this year's competition:
- Invertebrates make up 97% of all animal species.
- They provide critical ecosystem services like pollination and decomposition.
- Many invertebrates, like the leaf sheep, have unique adaptations that inspire scientific research.
- Conservation efforts must include invertebrates to maintain biodiversity.
The leaf sheep's victory highlights the importance of marine invertebrates and the need to protect their habitats. As climate change and pollution threaten ocean ecosystems, species like the leaf sheep face uncertain futures. By celebrating these creatures, we raise awareness and encourage action.
FAQ
What is a leaf sheep?
A leaf sheep is a species of sea slug (Costasiella kuroshimae) that looks like a leaf and can photosynthesize by incorporating chloroplasts from algae into its body.
How does the leaf sheep perform photosynthesis?
The leaf sheep feeds on algae and retains the chloroplasts in its cells, a process called kleptoplasty. These chloroplasts convert sunlight into energy, allowing the slug to survive without eating for extended periods.
Why are invertebrates important?
Invertebrates pollinate crops, filter water, decompose waste, and enrich soil. They are essential for ecosystem health and human survival, making up 97% of all animal species.
The Invertebrate of the Year competition reminds us that even the smallest creatures deserve recognition. The leaf sheep's victory is a testament to the wonder of nature and the importance of protecting all forms of life.
