Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) players are raising millions in a real-life campaign against the corporate elite, blending tabletop role-playing with political activism. Just before their election day, six Los Angeles city council candidates stood on stage at Hollywood’s Fonda Theatre, not for a debate but to play D&D. Comedian Brennan Lee Mulligan guided them through a short campaign to defeat corporate villains and an evil dragon, with hundreds of fans pledging donations up to $150 each for an “auto crit” to maximize damage against the dragon.
The Rise of D&D Political Activism
This event is part of a wider movement where players of D&D and other tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) are resisting the current political climate, including ICE raids, attacks on transgender rights, and the rise of artificial intelligence. Groups across the country have been playing online and in person to raise money, develop games expressing frustration with federal policies, and instruct people on how to help those affected.

How D&D Fundraising Works
D&D fundraising leverages the game’s mechanics, like “auto crits,” to incentivize donations. The DSA-LA show raised $30,000 for Los Angeles’ primary election, with five of the six candidates either winning re-election or advancing to the general election. This model has been replicated by other groups, turning fantasy battles into real-world change.
| Event | Amount Raised | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| DSA-LA D&D Show | $30,000 | 5 of 6 candidates advanced |
| National TTRPG Campaigns | Millions | Support for marginalized communities |
