Roblox privacy overhaul has become a critical focus after Australia's eSafety commissioner discovered that adults could still contact children without parental consent. The gaming platform has now committed to significant changes to prevent such interactions, ensuring a safer environment for young users. This article explores the new measures, the regulatory pressure behind them, and what parents need to know.
Why Roblox Privacy Overhaul Was Necessary
The eSafety commissioner's investigation revealed that adult users could view child accounts, send connection requests, and even interact with minors on forums outside game environments. This violated the Online Safety Act's codes, prompting a legal agreement from Roblox. The platform had already introduced some restrictions in December last year, but the regulator found them insufficient.

Key Findings from the eSafety Investigation
Testing showed that children's profiles, including account names and interests, were visible to anyone. Additionally, adults could respond to children's posts without parental consent. These gaps posed serious risks of grooming and exposure to inappropriate content.
| Safety Measure | Before Overhaul | After Overhaul |
|---|---|---|
| Default privacy for under-16 accounts | Not enforced | Enabled by default |
| Adult-to-child contact | Possible without consent | Blocked without parental approval |
| Direct chat for 13-15 year olds | Available | Disabled by default, requires age estimation |
| Voice chat for under-16s | Allowed | Restricted to 16+ |
New Commitments Under the Legal Agreement
Roblox has agreed to implement stricter verification processes and enhance parental controls. The company will also ensure that any communication between adults and children is subject to explicit parental consent. These changes aim to close the loopholes identified by the regulator.
How Parents Can Protect Their Children
Parents should review their child's privacy settings, enable age estimation, and activate parental controls to disable chat features. Regularly monitoring friend lists and connection requests is also essential. Roblox's new tools make it easier to manage these aspects.
- Set accounts to private by default
- Require parental consent for any adult contact
- Disable direct and voice chat for under-16s
- Use age estimation to verify user identity
- Regularly review connection requests and posts
Industry Impact and Future Outlook
This Roblox privacy overhaul sets a precedent for other gaming platforms. Regulators worldwide are likely to follow Australia's lead in enforcing stricter online safety standards. Roblox's cooperation with eSafety demonstrates a shift toward proactive compliance, but ongoing vigilance is required.
