The Nations Championship format has come under fire from England players after a brutal travel schedule covering 26,000 miles in three weeks. Ben Earl and teammates question the logistical demands of playing on three continents in successive weekends.
Why England Players Are Speaking Out
Steve Borthwick's squad traveled from Johannesburg to Liverpool to Santiago del Estero for matches against South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina. The relentless pace has left players exhausted and questioning the tournament's structure.

Ben Earl, who started all three fixtures, described the experience as 'brutal.' He noted the difficulty of seeing family briefly before departing again, calling it 'a tough way of ending a long season.'
The Travel Toll on Performance
Research shows jet lag and fatigue can reduce athletic performance by up to 20%. The England squad's schedule highlights a need for reform, with players suggesting a centralized location for matches.
| Match Location | Opponent | Miles Traveled |
|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg | South Africa | 5,600 |
| Liverpool | Fiji | 0 (home) |
| Santiago del Estero | Argentina | 7,200 |
| Total | 26,000 |
Proposed Solutions from Players
Earl suggested hosting multiple teams in one country for a 'festival feel,' benefiting both players and fans. 'You come to Australia or South Africa and there's so much rugby going on. How cool would that be?' he said.
- Reduce cross-continent travel by grouping matches in one region
- Create a festival atmosphere for fans and players
- Consider neutral grounds to balance travel demands
The Future of the Nations Championship
Ireland already opted out of a Tokyo trip, playing Japan in Australia instead. England's players believe all teams would benefit from similar adjustments. The tournament launched this year as a broadcaster-friendly alternative to traditional tours.
