Rory McIlroy's driver produced one of the most stunning shots of The Open, flying 403 yards onto the green, but his putting struggles left his championship hopes hanging in the balance. The Northern Irishman carded a solid 67 on Friday, yet missed multiple birdie chances from 10 to 20 feet, highlighting a recurring theme in his game. For golf fans and analysts alike, this contrast between fearless driving and tentative putting is a key storyline at Royal Liverpool.
McIlroy's Driver: A Weapon of Mass Distraction
On the par-four 9th, McIlroy unleashed a 403-yard drive that landed 11 feet from the hole, drawing gasps from the gallery. His ball speed reached 190 mph, showcasing why he remains one of the longest hitters on tour. Yet, as he admitted, the eagle putt was too cautious, and he settled for birdie. This moment encapsulated his round: imperious driving but inconsistent iron play and missed short putts.

Putting Woes: The Achilles' Heel
McIlroy missed several birdie opportunities from inside 20 feet, a trend that has plagued him in recent majors. While his driving ranks among the best, his putting stroke often falters under pressure. Statistically, he gained over 1.5 strokes off the tee but lost ground on the greens. This imbalance leaves him at one under par, five shots behind leaders Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns, who both shot record-equalling 62s.
