DIY Artificial Pond: How to Build One in Your Garden 2026

Paulo Vivere

Many dream of having an artificial pond in their garden to beautify it with a water feature full of magnificent aquatic plants and create a characteristic corner; but not everyone knows that you can build one yourself without spending a fortune. In fact, garden ponds can be constructed with inexpensive materials and without particular difficulty.

In this article, we follow step-by-step the construction of an artificial garden pond with special features. It has a rectangular shape, the bank structure is made with 95×45 mm autoclave-impregnated wooden planks, and the bottom is waterproofed with a thick nylon sheet.

All this is designed to make it simple to build; and, if one day you decide to remove it, it's also easy to put everything back as it was.

Artificial Pond – Construction

Start by building the sides of the basin, which also outline the footprint of the deepest part; then move on to marking out the excavation and digging it. After placing the perimeter wooden structure, waterproof the bottom; to do this, use a couple of different sheets so that water does not drain through the ground.

A border strip, dug only about ten centimeters or so deep, allows you to arrange regular stones around the perimeter. This trick perfectly solves the aesthetic connection between the pond and the lawn.

All that's left is to fill it with water and wait about ten days before planting the aquatic plants.

Choosing to add a recirculation pump is a winning idea because it provides enough oxygenated and clean water, helping plants stay healthy and lush.

Let's look in detail at how to build this artificial garden pond.

Hand-Dug Excavation

If you don't overdo the size of the water feature, the artificial pond can be installed almost anywhere you like, also because the depth doesn't have to be excessive. For tools, you'll need a shovel, a level, and measuring tape—all available from our home improvement collection.

Step 1: Mark and Dig

Use stakes and string to outline the rectangle. Dig to a uniform depth of about 40–50 cm, sloping the sides slightly outward for stability. Remove any sharp stones and roots.

Step 2: Build the Wooden Frame

Cut the 95×45 mm impregnated planks to length and assemble them into a rectangular frame using galvanized screws. This frame defines the pond's edge and supports the waterproof liner. For sturdy outdoor projects, browse our garden supplies for fasteners and sealants.

Step 3: Prepare the Base

Lay a 5 cm layer of sand at the bottom to cushion the liner. Then spread a geotextile fabric to protect against punctures. You can find similar protective materials in our home improvement section.

Step 4: Install the Waterproof Liner

Use a thick nylon or EPDM liner, draping it over the frame and into the excavation. Leave enough excess to fold over the wooden edges. Secure temporarily with stones.

Step 5: Finish the Border

Dig a shallow trench around the frame, about 10 cm deep. Place flat stones or pavers around the perimeter to hide the liner and create a neat transition to the lawn. For decorative stone options, check our outdoor decor collection.

Filling and Planting

Fill the pond slowly with water, adjusting the liner as it settles. Wait 10 days for the water to dechlorinate naturally (or use a dechlorinator). Then introduce aquatic plants like water lilies, irises, and floating hyacinths. To complete the look, consider adding a waterproof outdoor light to illuminate your pond at night.

Maintenance Tips

  • Install a recirculation pump to keep water oxygenated and clear. Find pumps and accessories in our garden supplies.
  • Remove fallen leaves regularly to prevent decay.
  • In winter, use a pond heater or floating ball to keep an ice-free area for gas exchange.
  • Trim dead plant material in early spring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build a DIY pond?

Costs vary, but a small rectangular pond like this one can be built for under $200 using basic materials from home improvement and garden supplies.

Do I need a pump?

While not strictly necessary, a recirculation pump greatly improves water quality and plant health. It's a worthwhile investment.

Can I build a pond without a liner?

We recommend a liner for reliable waterproofing. Alternatives like concrete are more permanent but harder to remove later.

How deep should the pond be?

For a simple decorative pond, 40–50 cm is sufficient. If you want fish, go deeper (at least 80 cm) to protect them from predators and temperature extremes.

What plants are best for a beginner pond?

Water lilies, marsh marigolds, and dwarf cattails are hardy and easy to care for. Pair them with a few floating plants like duckweed for natural filtration.
