Receiving a Christmas basket always caused quite a stir at my house, mostly because of us kids who would rush to uncover all the "treasures" that were sent to my parents. Over time, I discovered that the level of tackiness could be embarrassing in certain cases; a good Christmas basket only shines if we can afford to make it high-quality. So, why not make it homemade?
Receiving a beautiful package full of totally homemade culinary gifts will always bring more joy and be better received than any pre-designed pack from a company. It's a magnificent gift to show genuine affection to those who truly matter to us, also perfect to bring to the host if we're guests at holiday gatherings. What should it include?
Turrón and other traditional sweets

It's impossible not to picture turrón, polvorones, and marzipan when thinking of a Christmas basket. We've been waiting months for this moment - or so I'd like to think - to savor those little delights reserved for the holidays, making the pleasure twice as sweet. Anyone can buy turrón at any store, but homemade will cause a special stir.
There are many traditional Christmas sweets within our culinary culture, with specialties in each region, so we can choose the ones we know will be most enjoyed. Or simply bet on the classics that we think are truly essential.

Classic or more original turrones, polvorones and mantecados with their special touch, marquesas, almond cookies... we have so many recipes and options that the hard part will be choosing just a few.
How to present homemade turrón
No matter how good the turrón is, if we present it wrapped in aluminum foil, it loses its appeal. The solution is to use wax paper for wrapping food, which is sold in super cute designs.
We love this one decorated with cute bees (ideal, also, if you're giving a turrón that contains honey).

Homemade chocolates

In the past, a box of chocolates seemed to mark a bit more distinction and luxury in a Christmas basket. Nowadays, they're a bit less special because the offering has multiplied and because we overindulge in them the rest of the year; although more exclusive editions still appear during the holidays, we'll surprise much more with our homemade chocolates.
Something as easy as melting good chocolate and making chocolates with Christmas molds will be more appreciated than a box of supermarket chocolates. To give it another touch, we can fill them with nuts or almond paste, or simply prepare one of these recipes. Homemade truffles, chocolate bars, bonbons, mendiants... the customization is almost infinite and open to our creativity.
How to present chocolates or bonbons
If you're daring enough to present a chocolate bar, you can also wrap it in wax paper, but if you're into bonbons, you'll look like a pro presenting them in individual wrappers, candy-style. To do this, you can cut a roll of food paper with the design you like most, or opt for packs designed specifically for this purpose, like this one from Amazon.

Savory crackers, nuts, and other appetizers

These are highly appreciated options during the holidays as they allow for original snacking when there are guests at home. With the hustle and bustle of these days, few people find time to make their own crackers or nut toasts and prefer to buy them.
If we include several savory snack items, our basket will make a difference, and the best part is there are super simple recipes to prepare. We just need to show off a bit with the packaging, simply with nice jars, some labels, or homemade packages with Christmas food packaging.

The ideal way to present any of these appetizers is in well-decorated paper bags. There are multiple options on the market, but this pack of bags with Christmas designs, which also includes stickers and closures, seemed ideal to us.

Jams, compotes, and other preserves

The world of homemade preserves is a very practical wildcard when it comes to giving gifts. If we did our homework back then - summer is a perfect time to stock the pantry - now we just need to choose a range of jams and other varieties, put a nice hand-signed label on them, and that's it.
We can always prepare new recipes during these Advent days, also thinking about how autumnal or Christmas flavors appeal, with seasonal and highly spiced products. There's no need to overcomplicate things; jam with seasonal fruit and some spice, a sweet and sour chutney with exotic touches... They're easy and very rewarding.

Preserves, logically, must be presented in jars. But there are many options for them to look their best. This pack of jars decorated with snowflakes is unbeatable.

Homemade bread and rolls

A friend of my father's used to send us a wonderful basket with products from the Murcian orchard, and it included one of those round "country-style" loaves that were pure heaven. We received it with more enthusiasm than any cured meat; how much a good quality bread is appreciated!
In our bread recipe collection, we have a great selection of recipes to choose from, but I've selected the ones I think are most appropriate for the holidays, also including rolls and buns that look great on a festive table and can be very versatile in any menu.
How to present breads
Although breads can also be wrapped in food paper, they look better if they are included in the basket being visible. Therefore, they can be presented in small baskets, which will also be appreciated as a gift in themselves.

Liqueurs and drinks

It seems no self-respecting Christmas basket is without its bottles of cava, champagne, or wine; it's hard for us to offer our homemade version, but if you're hooked on craft beer, don't hesitate to include bottles of your own brew.
The rest of us, however, can opt for some very simple homemade liqueur, a bottle of spiced wine to serve hot, or some non-alcoholic drinks so everyone can enjoy them at home.
How to present homemade liqueur
As with preserves, the bottles in which we present our liqueur must meet certain requirements, but this doesn't mean they have to be ugly. If, in addition, we decorate them with some nice labels (which can include a message), we'll have the perfect gift.
