Jalen Brunson delivered one of his finest playoff performances on April 28, 2026, scoring 39 points with 8 assists as the New York Knicks routed the Atlanta Hawks 126-97 to take a 3-2 series lead. The dominant win at Madison Square Garden put New York one victory away from the second round and reinforced Brunson's standing as the Knicks' undisputed offensive engine in high-pressure moments.
Brunson Takes Over
From the opening possessions, Brunson imposed his will on Atlanta's defensive scheme. His combination of mid-range mastery, pick-and-roll execution, and late-shot-clock creation made him effectively unguardable for extended stretches. He reached 39 points with characteristic efficiency—maximizing his shot attempts while generating clean looks for teammates whenever Atlanta committed multiple defenders to stopping him individually.

Series Context
The Knicks' 3-2 lead comes after a volatile series. New York won Game 1 convincingly before Atlanta stunned them in Game 2 with a CJ McCollum-fueled buzzer-beating victory. The Knicks responded with consistency in Games 4 and 5, leveraging Brunson's brilliance and their defensive identity to push the series into a closing position.
Atlanta's Resilience
The Hawks entered Game 5 having won Game 3 at home, demonstrating competitive quality that ensures Game 6 in Atlanta on April 30 will not be a formality. Trae Young's playmaking and McCollum's veteran scoring give Atlanta enough offensive firepower to keep any game within reach. The Garden crowd will hope New York can close before returning for a potential decisive Game 7.
Knicks' Path Forward
Should the Knicks advance, they project to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round—a matchup pitting Brunson's offensive mastery against Donovan Mitchell's own superstar scoring in what would be one of the East's most compelling semifinal storylines of the 2026 postseason.
Brunson's Playoff Legacy
Brunson's ability to consistently elevate his game in the postseason has cemented him as one of the East's most reliable performers when the stakes are highest. His 39-point performance in a blowout win—maintaining focus and efficiency even as the game became comfortable—demonstrates the professional discipline that defines genuine stars from merely talented players. His ascending postseason résumé makes a case for recognition among the conference's elite playmakers.
The Brunson 39-point Knicks Game 5 performance 2026 is another entry in an increasingly impressive postseason body of work from one of basketball's most underrated superstars.
