The Otemon Gate is the only known example of this design, which is why we will teach you how to make the impossible splice. There is no gap between the two pieces of wood.
To make this decorative but very strong joint you will need:
- 2 Pieces of wood 15.0×7.0x7.0 cm
- Hand saw
- Chisel (14 mm)
- Hammer
- Sandpaper 120 and 240 grains
Steps to make the impossible wood splice:
Step 1: Marking the male part
First, be sure to print the plans I provide and scale them up or down if your wood pieces have different dimensions than mine.
Mark all sides of the piece of wood according to the plans.
Step 2: Cut the male part
Use a hand saw to cut the male part. With a chisel finish and clean if necessary. Be sure to stay outside the lines so you have room to work with your chisel.
Step 3: Mark the female part
Again mark the feminine part according to the plans. For best fit you can always measure the male part and mark the female accordingly. This will eliminate any misalignment between the masculine and feminine parts.
Step 4: Cut the female part
Again with your hand saw, carefully cut just a little bit inside the lines. Then clean with your chisel.
Step 5: Finished!
Finally for this project I used two pieces of pine. To make a better contrast between the two parts, I used a brown wood stain on the female part.
Also to assemble the two pieces, simply push the female part diagonally into the male part. Make sure you have a tight fit and adjust with your chisel if necessary.
