If you choose to go that route, do so with specific 2.5″ pocket screws (right next to where they sell the jigs at the hardware store). Otherwise, using regular screws and small "L" brackets works fine too. Either strategy will allow you to disassemble the bed frame in case you ever need to move it to a different room or building.

What is a bed frame?
- Raise the mattress off the floor.
- Provides storage space underneath.
- It looks good and makes a room cozier.
- The slot construction (also called interference fit) is ingenious.
- It uses the material itself to provide rigidity to a structure and negates, or seriously reduces, the need for fasteners when done correctly.
Structural parts
The frame gets its structure from a "spine" running from head to toe, which has four "vertebrae" that extend from side to side, intersecting at 90-degree angles. The mattress is supported by 2″ x 4″ s, running across the top of the notched skeleton.
The vertebrae are notched to fit the width and depth of the 2″ x 4″ s, so that the top edges of the skeleton and the mattress supports are level with each other. This means that every piece of wood, except the runner board and headboard, provides support for the mattress.
Aesthetic pieces
The headboard is simply another 2″ x 12″, attached to the back of the farthest vertebrae with screws. The runner board is over 2″ x 12″s, cut to fit around the mattress. It sits over the frame and supports of the mattress and provides a ledge that prevents the mattress from moving in any direction.
Dimensiones
This design can be adapted to fit any size mattress. All dimensions listed here are to fit a full size mattress
- Width (side to side): 71.5″
- Depth (foot to back edge of headboard support): 83.75″
- Height (floor to top surface of runner board): 12.75″
- Height (floor to top edge of headboard): 33.125″
- I opted to use 2″ x 12″ lumber for the runner board.
NOTE: A helpful little tip that I had to realize the hard way, is that framing lumber is never actually the dimensions that give each board its name. This has to do with the finishing process while grinding. For a chart of actual vs. nominal lumber sizes, see the images above. Keeping this in mind can save you a lot of headaches when it comes to designing something from scratch.
Step 4: Buy materials

Here's the list again for you:
- 9 2″ x 4″ x 8′ Framing Boards
- 8 2″ x 12″ x 8′ Framing Boards
- 1 Framed Board 2″ x 12 x 6′
- 8 or more screws with a minimum length of 2.5″
Look for boards that are straight. A small bow is inevitable, but the less the better.
Step 5: Choose your boards

Decide which boards will serve as each part of the frame. Find the pieces with the grain that looks best and place them as the pieces that will be most visible: the headboard and the runner boards.
Step 6: Crosscuts

There are 3 different types of cuts that we are going to make. In order of simplicity those are:
- 90 degree cross cuts
- 45 degree miter cuts
- Notch cut
We will start with the cross sections.
Measurement: Gather all the 2″ x 4″ boards and any 2″ x 12″ boards that you have decided will serve as the skeleton and headboard. Measure and mark the boards at the following lengths. Using the speed square will ensure good straight lines.
- 2″ x 12″ s
- 1x Headboard: 64.125″
- 4x Vertebrae: 75.5″
- 1x Spine: 88.75″
- 1x Front Runners: 75.5″
- 2x Side Runners: 82.25″
- 2″ x 4″ s
- 2x Headboard supports: 33″
- 8x mattress supports: 77.5″
Cut:
Wear eye, ear and breathing protection. Using the circular saw, cut along the outside edge of the pencil line. Watch the blade to make sure you cut when necessary. Move the saw forward with steady, even pressure. Be sure not to move faster than the blade can remove the material, and not so slow that the blade heats the wood, causing burn marks.
Step 7: Cuts with the miter saw

The runner boards, the bottom corners of all the skeleton pieces, and the back corners of the header supports are cut with 45 degree miter cuts to give things astylized look. The square makes quick and easy work of making 45 degree lines too.
Measurement:
Skeleton and Header Bottom: At both ends of the skeleton and header pieces, find the center of the board (5.5/8″). From there, use the square to draw a 45-degree angled line toward the inside of the board. Be sure to make marks for cutting the bottom corners on both sides of each board.
Skating Rinks: This is a little different since we haven't cut these lengths yet. For the sides, we are going to leave one end flat and miter the other, with the longest tip of the board measuring 86″ from the back of the flat edge. Find that length with a tape measure and use the square to mark the angled line. For the front runner board, mark the angled lines so they are closer to each other with the pointy tips farthest apart measuring 75.5″ apart.
Cut!
Just like before, put on that safety gear and use the circular saw to make the cuts, watching the blade to make sure it lies straight on your pencil lines.
Step 8: Cut the skeletal grooves

Slots in the gyrus are cut so that the vertebrae slide from above. Each slot is measured as the width of the intersecting board (1.5″) and half the depth of the intersecting board (5 5/8″). This is how we have a good strong fit.
Slot positions
- Spine (measured from front edges): 9 3/8″, 34 1/4″, 58 7/8″, 84 3/8″
- Vertebrae (measured from the center of the board and the slot): 75 3/8
Making the cuts
Measure the slot positions on each board.
Use your square to get straight perpendicular lines where you will actually make the cuts.
Use your circular saw to cut the outside edges. For the flat part in the center of the board that connects the two cuts, use the jigsaw or multitool to completely remove the piece of wood. Alternatively, you can also use the same method to make the mattress support notches: Make a bunch of perpendicular cuts with the circular saw until the thin pieces of wood can be separated by hand or with a hammer and/or chisel. Sort of like this video below, but with the different dimensions of 1.5″ x 5.625″ (half depth and full width of 2″ x 12″) in place.
Step 9: Cut Mattress Support Notches

Measure and mark
Take the 4 vertebrae and tighten them with the quick clamps. Make sure you square all the edges. Once attached, it should look like a giant board. Using a pencil and your speed dial, mark where the notches go for the 2″ x 4″ brackets. Each notch will be 2″ x 4″ AKA 3.5″ wide. Draw an "X" in the space to be removed so you know exactly where to cut. Using the depth gauge on your circular saw, set the depth of the cut to be the exact depth of a 1.5″ 2″ x 4″ AKA.
Cut!
Put your safety gear back on and pick up that circular saw. Start by carefully cutting the outside edge of each notch on all 4 boards, in smooth, even steps. Then use the saw to cut a bunch of straight lines between the two edge cuts. Once you've made enough cuts, there will be a bunch of thin cuts between the two outer edges. Simply separate them by hand or use a hammer to dislodge them. Once you have done this for all 8 notches, remove the clamps and get ready to assemble your new bed!
Step 10: Assembly
Place the column where you would like the bed to go.
Groove for each vertebra along the spine. It is possible thatYou may need to make adjustments to the slots if you did not cut them far enough. It's okay if that's the case. I always play it safe when I make cuts because you can always remove later but you can't go back once you cut it.
Place the 2″ x 4″ mattress supports in the slots along the vertebrae. If you want, you can fasten them with screws, but it is not necessary.
Attach the headboard brackets to the back of the headboard with screws. Be sure to drill pilot holes slightly narrower than the diameter of the screw before doing this to avoid breaking any of the boards. Use the same method to screw the headboard onto the back of the posterior vertebrae.
Place the runner boards on top of the “skeleton” and attach them with the fasteners of your choice: “L” brackets from the bottom to the pocket hole vertebrae from the bottom of the runner boards for easy but perhaps less attractive fastening: from the top of the runner to the top of the vertebrae with screws.
However you achieved it... Congratulations! You're basically done!
Step 11: Wood Finish

At this point, it depends entirely on yourself. The bed frame will work no matter what you do at this point. Personally, I like the look of natural wood. All I did to finish mine was sand to a fine grit (320) and slather on some mineral oil mixed with beeswax, to bring out the depth and color of the grain. This darkens the wood slightly and provides a richer contrast in grain.
Alternatively, you can stain the wood to a color you like. At that point you can choose to use a sealant such as polyurethane then simply use a sealant without staining it.
NOTE: You can't stain the wood once you've sealed it, so just know if you're going that route, a sealer is always the last step. Sealing wood is a complicated process. Since a bed base does not come into contact with liquid, it is not necessary. However, it will technically increase the lifespan of the wood. Water-based sealers are a little easier to apply and clean. Oil-based sealers provide a richer contrast in the wood grain and darken things a bit.
So you have options!
Step 12: Enjoy!

After all the hard work, you deserve a nap. The good thing is that you have a beautiful new place to do it. Not only that, but you'll sleep like a baby because of all the satisfaction you get from making something yourself.
Be sure to leave a comment or reach out if you've done this project! I'd love to see what you think and what you came up with. Feel free to make changes and interpret things however you want. Greetings!
