A Pulley System on your Stairs is one of the best DIY things you can do to save yourself and work when going down or up a heavy object.
I want to get rid of old boxes or heavy items and put them in your attic.
Instead of breaking your back to store them, why not use a pulley system to carry them at a fraction of the weight?
We are by no means lazy, it's more of a security issue.
I mentioned how difficult this must be for the elderly. Or, How could someone who lives alone achieve such a feat?
Could a roll system help load materials and load boxes into the attic with ease?
That being said, we brainstormed this idea.
Steps to create a pulley system on your stairs:
Step 1: What you will need

The best benefit of 3D printing the wheels was having the ability to modify them so that they fit perfectly on the staircase and adhere to the barriers.
In our example, our wheels have a lip on them to better guide across the staircase.
Please allow me to emphasize, these are our specific measurements for our own attic staircase.
Everyone can vary. To do this successfully in your home, measurements must be made at your end and variations must be applied.
Here is a list of materials you will need. 3D printer for wheels.
- Skateboard Bearing Kit (Average Set Size)
- 5/16 inch washers
- 5/16-24 nuts. 4 count
- 5/16-24 X 1-1/2 screw
- 2 Pulleys (your choice) The more you have, the easier the load will be.
- 50 feet of rope
Tools for the pulley system on your stairs:
- Nail gun
- Sierra
- Pipe wrench
- Drill with bits
- Carpenter's squares
- Tape measure
Wood:
- A 3/4 inch wood. x 2 ft. x 2 feet.
- 1 inch x 2 inch hardwood. x 4 feet.
Step 2: Visualize and make your design

These designs were made in Solid Works.
They are a basic design. I have attached the STL in case you want to print the exact work for the wheel yourself.
Step 3: Measure and Cut the Plywood

Measure the length of your attic staircase.
This will determine the length of the wood to be cut.
Cut the plywood to 14″ wide, unless your staircase varies.
When using a jigsaw, to cut straight, we hold a long piece of wood and use it as a fence to cut a nice straight line.
World problems first! In the end, however, we have produced the same result.
Step 4: Making the wheels!

The most tedious part! Drill 4 holes in the 1″x2”x 2′ pieces of wood.
This is where the wheels will go. Then use the wrench to screw in the bolt.
To join the wheel successfully, it will go as follows.
Screw on the bolt place the washer on top of the bolt place the wheel on top of the washer and screw the skateboard bearing to the wheel lastly place the nut on the restriction to hold it all in place.
Step 5: Attach the Wheels to the Body

To prevent them from moving, it is highly recommended that you hold it because the work will tip over.
To attach the wheels to the body, turn the plywood board over and use the nail gun to fasten the components.
We mark where the wood is with a pencil to maintain a straighter line of nails.
Be sure to leave 1 inch on the sides for the wheels to fit on the ladder.
Step 6: Tests 1,2,3…

With all wheels successfully attached.
Be sure to test how well it will fit your staircase. If it glides nice and smooth, you're right where you need to be.

Step 7: Make the board and add stability

The board is very essential. It will need to be strong enough to carry heavy loads without bending or breaking.
Because of this, we added a small wooden barrier to the back of the board just to give it more stability.
To also give more stability, we cut a 1″x2”x 2′ piece of wood to fit the bottom and complete the bottom.
Not only does this give you a place to join the chord for later, but it also gives it strength and stability.
Then cut the plywood to 8″ tall by 14″ wide so it fits perfectly into the body.
This is the board. Set aside for later.
Use a piece of leftover plywood to attach to the bottom.
This is simply for the nails to adhere to something and make the bond more durable.
To make the wood barrier, cut the 1″x2”x 2′ piece of wood to fit the back of the board.
Use your handy clamps to hold the wood and secure it with a nail gun.
Then place the board in the front. of the piece of wood and fix it with a nail gun, with the help of the clamps.
Nail in any spots you missed or need extra grip.
Step 8: Attach the pulleys and rope

Drill a hole to fit the para chord.
Double knot and use a lighter to melt the para to prevent fraying (optional). Attach your small pulley to the rope at the front.
Securely attach your larger pulleys to a stable board built inside your attic.
You don't want them to fall off! Thread your rope to pass through the pulleys according to the diagram I provided.
I used #3. This is the 3 pulley system. The mechanical advantage in the diagram suggests that the workload is reduced by 75%. Look at the magic!
Step 9: Wow!

Watch how your load of tWork is reduced by 75%!
You can pull your load from below, or you can do it from the attic.
If you work alone, you can remove the load from the attic without help!
Game changer for someone who lives alone without any help.
Now I'm no longer afraid of climbing the creaky stairs to the attic or falling and breaking my back!
Without a doubt this pulley system on your stairs will make things easier to do.
