The Australian National University (ANU) has been accused of a hysterical response to students using AI cheating tools, as universities across Australia scramble to secure assessments. The 2025 Australian Digital Inclusion Index reveals 78.9% of secondary and tertiary students are now using generative AI, raising urgent questions about academic integrity.
ANU's Three Options for AI Cheating Prevention
ANU released a consultation paper proposing three options to combat AI cheating. The first classifies assessments as secure—completely free from AI risk—or insecure. A second option requires students to declare where AI was used in their work. The third focuses on greater on-campus testing.

Faculty Reactions to the Proposed Changes
One ANU academic described the process as panicked, saying, "Everyone is adjusting in a panicked way, which is aggravated by a lack of resources." Another warned the response could harm inclusivity for students with disabilities or caring responsibilities, calling it a reactionary response that risks unwinding progress.
Comparison of AI Cheating Prevention Strategies
| Strategy | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Secure assessments | Eliminates AI cheating risk | Increases on-campus burden, reduces flexibility |
| AI declaration | Promotes transparency | Relies on student honesty |
| On-campus testing | Controlled environment | Less inclusive for remote students |
Key Takeaways on AI in Australian Universities
- 78.9% of students use generative AI, per the 2025 Digital Inclusion Index.
- ANU's consultation includes three options: secure assessments, AI declarations, and on-campus testing.
- Critics warn of a panicked and hysterical response that may harm inclusivity.
- Experts caution Australia is shipping intellectual capability to California and China without proper educational rigour.
Implications for Academic Integrity
The debate highlights a broader challenge: balancing AI cheating prevention with inclusive education. As universities rush to adapt, the risk of shipping intellectual capability abroad grows if assessments lose credibility. The ANU's next steps could set a precedent for the entire sector.
FAQ
What is the ANU's secure assessment option?
The secure assessment option means exams or assignments are completely free from the risk of AI cheating, typically through proctored, on-campus testing.
How many Australian students use generative AI?
According to the 2025 Australian Digital Inclusion Index, 78.9% of secondary and tertiary students use generative AI tools.
Why are academics calling the ANU response hysterical?
