Australia Flu Surge: Why Spring Brings Highest Infection Risk

Australia's flu infections are surging unusually late in the year, with health experts warning that the current period represents the highest risk of infection as the season nears its peak. Despite winter being over, cases of influenza have continued to climb into spring, catching many by surprise.

Why Is Australia's Flu Season So Late?

According to Dr James McCaw, an epidemiologist at the University of Melbourne, the delayed flu season is likely due to a combination of factors, including reduced immunity from prior seasons and the timing of vaccine rollouts. "The flu season has arrived later than in previous years, with cases continuing to rise as we move into spring," said Victoria's chief health officer, Dr Caroline McElnay. This late surge means that the risk of infection is now at its highest, as the season approaches its peak.

Current Flu Data in Australia

In the fortnight ending 6 September, the Australian Respiratory Surveillance report recorded 31,650 notified influenza cases, up 27.2% from the previous period. New South Wales reported the highest number with 14,256 cases, followed by Victoria with 7,039 and Queensland with 6,625. In Victoria alone, influenza notifications have increased by about 400% over the past seven weeks, with influenza A accounting for the majority of cases.

State Influenza Cases (fortnight ending 6 Sept) Increase from Previous Period
New South Wales 14,256 27.2%
Victoria 7,039 27.2%
Queensland 6,625 27.2%
Total Australia 31,650 27.2%

Emergency department presentations for acute respiratory infections have risen by 25% in Victoria over the past six weeks, primarily driven by children aged 5 to 17 years. This age group is particularly vulnerable as they return to school after the holidays, increasing transmission rates.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions are at higher risk of severe illness from the flu. The current surge is predominantly affecting school-aged children, who can easily spread the virus to family members and the wider community. Pregnant women and individuals with compromised immune systems are also advised to take extra precautions.

  • Children aged 5-17: Major drivers of the current surge, especially in Victoria.
  • Elderly individuals: Higher risk of complications and hospitalization.
  • People with chronic conditions: Asthma, diabetes, and heart disease can worsen with flu.
  • Pregnant women: Increased risk of severe illness and complications.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Family

Health officials emphasize that it's not too late to get a flu vaccine. Dr McElnay advises, "Protect themselves and their loved ones these school holidays by staying home when sick, keeping unwell children at home, and reminding everyone that it's not too late to get a flu vaccine." In addition to vaccination, practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes, can help reduce the spread of the virus.

With cases expected to remain high over the coming weeks, including through the school holidays, it's crucial to remain vigilant. If you experience flu-like symptoms, consult your healthcare provider and avoid contact with others to prevent further transmission.
