Australia's gambling logos on sports jerseys will remain visible to children until 2032, sparking criticism from crossbench senator David Pocock. The Albanese government's ban includes a five-year transition period, which public health experts and politicians argue is too long and undermines the policy's intent.
Government's Transition Period Under Fire
The federal government passed legislation prohibiting gambling company logos on professional sports jerseys, but allowed a five-year grandfathering period for clubs and bookmakers to adjust. This means a child in year 8 today could see betting logos throughout their school years.

Senator Pocock described the situation as 'absurd,' noting that even after the three-year statutory review, jerseys may still display betting logos. He urged clubs to end sponsorships 'at the earliest opportunity.' Liberal MP Andrew Wallace, who voted against the bill, advocated for a two-year deadline, stating that was 'appropriate' for clubs to find alternatives.
Health Experts Question the Delay
Public health experts have condemned the extended timeline, questioning why the government recognized the harm of gambling logos but allowed them to persist. Research links early exposure to gambling advertising with increased risk of problem gambling in adulthood.
| Stakeholder | Proposed Transition Period | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Albanese Government | 5 years | Allow clubs and bookmakers to adjust |
| David Pocock | Immediate | Protect children from gambling exposure |
| Andrew Wallace | 2 years | Balance industry needs with public health |
