Tame had described the claims as "debunked" and "propaganda," which many interpreted as a denial of the atrocities committed by Hamas. The former Australian of the Year, known for her advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, faced intense criticism for appearing to disbelieve Israeli survivors.
Grace Tame's Apology and Clarification
In her Instagram video, Tame sought to clarify her position. "There's something I've wanted to clarify for a while, which I regret not clarifying sooner. I stand with survivors of sexual violence everywhere, no matter who they are," she said.
She continued, "Comments I made on ABC radio in March this year were misinterpreted to mean that I disbelieve Israeli survivors of sexual violence. This is not the case. I always have, and always will stand with survivors of sexual violence."
Tame also referenced a Human Rights Watch report, stating that the organisation had been unable to find evidence to support claims that Israeli women were raped en masse on 7 October 2023. However, she added, "I do not deny the legitimate accusations of rape made by individual Israeli women, including accounts of gang-rape."
Reactions to Grace Tame's Apology
The apology has elicited mixed responses. Some have welcomed Tame's clarification, viewing it as a necessary step to mend fences with the Jewish community. Others remain critical, arguing that her initial comments were harmful and that the apology does not go far enough.
Jewish leaders in Australia have emphasised the importance of believing survivors, particularly in the context of the 7 October attacks. They have called for greater sensitivity and understanding when discussing such traumatic events.
