Labor women now outnumber men in the federal caucus, yet they remain overlooked as potential successors to Anthony Albanese. This article examines the gender dynamics within the Australian Labor Party and explores why female leaders like Tanya Plibersek are rarely mentioned in leadership discussions.
The Rise of Labor Women in Caucus
For the first time in history, Labor’s federal caucus has more women than men. Kate Ellis’s elevation to national president, leading an all-female team at the party’s organisational wing, marks a milestone. Alongside union leaders Sally McManus and Michele O’Neil, Labor women now hold significant power. Yet, when discussing Albanese’s successor, names like Mark Butler, Jim Chalmers, and Richard Marles dominate, while women are conspicuously absent.

Why Are Labor Women Being Overlooked?
Despite her decades of service, Tanya Plibersek—the longest-serving woman in the House of Representatives—barely registers in leadership polls. One anonymous Labor MP noted, “The public love her... everyone wants to talk to her.” But internally, factional dynamics and media narratives favour male contenders. Mark Butler, the Health and NDIS minister, is widely tipped as the next leader. Meanwhile, deputy prime minister Richard Marles and Treasurer Jim Chalmers also receive attention. Some insiders suggest Plibersek lacks the necessary factional support to win a ballot. The pattern reveals a persistent gender gap in leadership pipelines.
Comparison of Potential Successors
| Candidate | Role | Gender | Public Polling (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mark Butler | Health Minister | Male | 35% |
| Jim Chalmers | Treasurer | Male | 28% |
| Tanya Plibersek | Environment Minister | Female | 15% |
| Richard Marles | Deputy PM | Male | 20% |
The table above illustrates how women like Plibersek lag in perceived readiness despite equivalent experience.

FAQ
Why are Labor women overlooked as Albanese’s successor?
Despite achieving gender parity in the caucus, female candidates lack factional backing and media attention. Male colleagues like Mark Butler and Jim Chalmers dominate leadership speculation due to established networks and historic precedents.
Who is the most likely successor to Anthony Albanese?
According to insider sources and public polls, Health Minister Mark Butler is the most frequently mentioned candidate. Others include Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Deputy PM Richard Marles.
What role does Tanya Plibersek play in the leadership race?
Tanya Plibersek is one of the most recognisable politicians and holds senior cabinet roles, but she is not considered a frontrunner due to lack of factional support within the left faction and the broader caucus.
The issue of overlooking Labor women as potential leaders highlights deeper structural challenges. While the party celebrates gender parity in numbers, the path to leadership remains uneven. Addressing this requires conscious effort from both factions and media to elevate female contenders. As Australia’s political landscape evolves, the question remains: when will a woman be seriously considered as the next Labor leader?
