Moira Deeming has been disendorsed as the Victorian Liberal Party candidate for the upcoming state election, marking a dramatic turn in her political career. The state party executive voted on Friday to remove her from the number 1 position in the Western Metropolitan region, despite her dropping an eleventh-hour legal challenge against the party. This decision reshapes the electoral landscape and raises questions about internal party dynamics.
What Led to Moira Deeming's Disendorsement?
The disendorsement stems from a controversial incident in May, where Deeming accused fellow Liberal MP Matthew Guy of grabbing her “violently” in a headlock. However, she later claimed she misunderstood the meaning of headlock after CCTV footage showed Guy placing his hand on her upper back during a conversation. Police investigated and found “no offence detected,” but the fallout continued to escalate.

Deeming had sought a supreme court challenge to prevent the party from moving against her, but withdrew it on Wednesday. Despite remaining in the opposition party room, she will lose her seat after the November election unless she runs as an independent. The Liberal Party stated, “The matter is resolved,” and thanked Deeming for her service.
Impact on the Victorian State Election
This disendorsement weakens the Liberal Party's ticket in the Western Metropolitan region, a key battleground. With Deeming out, the party must now reorganize its candidate list ahead of the November election. Political analysts suggest this could affect voter confidence and party unity, especially given the public nature of the dispute.
