A Victorian minister has broken ranks with Premier Jacinta Allan over CFMEU allegations involving a hospital project, calling a report about improper government interference “alarming.” The health infrastructure minister, Melissa Horne, publicly sought assurances from the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (Vida) that no wrongdoing occurred. This fracture within the government comes less than five months before the state election in November.
Minister’s Public Break With Premier
Melissa Horne’s Facebook post revealed she wrote to the head of Vida after Nine newspapers reported that the government pressured public servants to dismiss a plastering contractor from a hospital project due to CFMEU disapproval. Premier Allan had earlier dismissed the reports as having “no basis,” but Horne’s actions signal growing internal dissent over handling corruption allegations on infrastructure projects.

Premier Resists Royal Commission Calls
Jacinta Allan continues to resist pressure to call a royal commission into corruption on government building projects, arguing it is not the most effective way to create cultural change. However, Horne’s letter directly challenged that stance, stating: “These allegations of interference are deeply concerning.” The minister also noted she had no contact with the CFMEU during her tenure.
