Andy Burnham has entered 10 Downing Street as Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade, drawing warm congratulations from world leaders but also intense scrutiny over the monumental challenges awaiting him. The former Manchester mayor steps into office at a time of profound national unease, with the economy struggling and public trust in government at a low.
World Leaders Welcome Britain’s New PM
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed hope for a deeper UK-EU relationship, saying he wanted to give “new momentum to the partnership” rekindled by predecessor Keir Starmer. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke with Burnham on Monday evening, emphasizing continued support for Ukraine and calling the UK a “close partner.” Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, noted a “very good first discussion” and a shared commitment to “bringing the EU and UK closer.”

A Contrast in Media Coverage
Beyond diplomatic platitudes, international media focused on Burnham’s regional persona. France’s Public Sénat described him as a man from “the working class of the north of England,” building an “everyman” image often seen without a tie, in a T-shirt. Italy’s Corriere della Sera, however, warned that the UK is experiencing “profound unease, instability and social resentment” and questioned whether Burnham’s plans—nationalisation, state intervention, and reindustrialisation—look backward instead of forward.
The Scale of the Task Ahead
The Irish Times noted that Burnham may be “a breath of fresh air” but the challenges that brought down Starmer—including energy rationing, rubbish in the streets, and IMF bailouts—still loom large. The new PM must navigate a fractured parliament, a cost-of-living crisis, and strained relations with both the EU and the US.
| Challenge | Impact on UK | Burnham’s Proposed Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Energy crisis | High household bills, rationing fears | Renationalisation, green investment |
| Economic stagnation | Low growth, IMF bailout memory | State intervention, reindustrialisation |
| Social unrest | Strikes, public resentment | Everyman communication, localism |
| EU relations | Post-Brexit friction | Closer partnership, new momentum |
