Andy Burnham wants to bring the men's World Cup back to the UK in 2042, a move that would mark the first time the tournament returns to British shores since 1966. The Greater Manchester mayor has been vocal about his ambition, calling it 'insane' that only one World Cup has ever been held in the UK. With the Prime Minister reportedly supportive, the bid could reshape the future of international football hosting.
The Push for a 2042 World Cup in the UK
At a meeting in No 10 North in Manchester, Prime Minister Keir Starmer told regional mayors he was keen for the tournament to be played in the British Isles. Burnham, a season ticket holder at Everton, has long championed the idea. He previously expressed discomfort over the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but now sees 2042 as a realistic target.

Why 2042? FIFA Rotation Rules
FIFA's rotation policy, introduced in 2000, ensures the World Cup cycles through its six continental confederations. Under current regulations, no European country is eligible to host until 2042. This makes 2042 the earliest possible year for a UK bid, aligning perfectly with Burnham's proposal.
Potential Co-Hosts and Joint Bids
Joint bids have become increasingly common. The UK and Ireland are already set to host the men's European Championships in 2028, involving England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. A similar collaborative approach could be used for the 2042 World Cup, with all home nations potentially sharing the tournament.
| Year | Host | Winner |
|---|---|---|
| 1966 | England | England |
| 2042 (potential) | UK (England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland) | TBD |
The 1966 World Cup remains the only time England has hosted or won the tournament. A 2042 bid would not only bring the event back but also give Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland their first taste of World Cup hosting.
