Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, was sworn in as interim US senator following his sudden death, continuing a long tradition of family succession in American politics.
When Lindsey Graham was in college, his parents died just over a year apart. He became the legal guardian of his 13-year-old sister Darline, later adopting her so she could receive his benefits from his service as an air force lawyer. On Tuesday, after Graham's death at age 71, Darline Graham was appointed to serve the remainder of his Senate term, which ends on January 3.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced the appointment at a press conference in Columbia, stating, "Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now." With the backing of former President Donald Trump, the appointment was swift and unopposed.
Historic Appointment for South Carolina
Upon being sworn in, Darline Graham made history as the first woman to represent South Carolina in the US Senate. Surrounded by grieving staff and advisers, the 62-year-old said, "Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him." Her appointment follows the "widow's succession" tradition, where a family member temporarily fills a vacant seat until a successor is elected.
The Widow's Succession Tradition
This practice has helped open Congress to more women in the 20th century. The table below compares notable widow's succession appointments in US history:
| Senator | Appointee | Year | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lindsey Graham | Darline Graham | 2025 | South Carolina |
| John McCain | Cindy McCain | 2018 | Arizona |
| Robert Byrd | No appointment (special election) | 2010 | West Virginia |
| Henry Jackson | Daniel J. Evans | 1983 | Washington |
