Fly infestations in summer 2025 have become a growing concern for UK households, with many reporting a significant increase in indoor and outdoor fly activity. This article explores the causes behind the surge, practical solutions for flats and homes, and expert-backed prevention strategies to keep your living space fly-free.
Why Are Fly Infestations Worse This Summer?
According to recent reports, the UK is experiencing a noticeable rise in fly populations compared to previous decades. Factors such as warmer temperatures, increased humidity, and changes in waste management contribute to ideal breeding conditions. Climate change is also altering insect life cycles, leading to longer and more intense fly seasons.

The Role of Urban Living and Waste
Urban areas, especially flats without gardens, face unique challenges. Overflowing bins, compost heaps, and pet waste attract flies. Unlike rural homes, flat dwellers often lack outdoor space to implement natural deterrents, making infestations harder to control.
Effective Solutions for Fly Infestations
While experts suggest wildlife-friendly measures like creating ponds or planting repellent herbs, these aren’t always feasible for everyone. Here are practical, budget-friendly options:
- Insect screens for windows and doors – a one-time investment that blocks flies while allowing ventilation.
- Fly traps and sticky tapes – place near entry points and food areas.
- Essential oil sprays (e.g., lavender, eucalyptus) – natural repellents safe for indoor use.
- Proper food storage – keep counters clean and seal leftovers immediately.
- Regular bin disposal – especially in flats, use sealed bins and empty them daily.
Comparison: DIY vs. Professional Pest Control
| Method | Cost | Effectiveness | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY traps & sprays | Low | Moderate (temporary) | Small infestations |
| Insect screens | Medium (one-off) | High (preventive) | Long-term prevention |
| Professional extermination | High | Very high (immediate) | Severe infestations |
Key Takeaways for a Fly-Free Summer
- Identify and eliminate breeding sources (standing water, organic waste).
- Seal entry points with screens or weather stripping.
- Maintain cleanliness, especially in kitchens and dining areas.
- Use natural repellents as a first line of defense.
- Seek professional help if DIY methods fail after two weeks.
FAQ: Common Questions About Fly Infestations
FAQ
Why are there so many flies in my house this summer?
Increased temperatures and humidity accelerate fly breeding. Open windows, uncovered food, and nearby waste sources attract them indoors. Flies can lay hundreds of eggs in decaying organic matter, leading to rapid population growth.
What is the best way to get rid of flies without chemicals?
Install insect screens on all openings, use sticky traps, and create a DIY vinegar trap (apple cider vinegar with dish soap). Additionally, keep surfaces clean and store food in airtight containers.
How do I prevent flies in a flat with no garden?
Focus on indoor hygiene: take out trash daily, wipe down counters, and avoid leaving pet food out. Use window screens and keep doors shut. You can also place citronella candles near entry points.
In conclusion, while fly infestations are unpleasant, they are manageable with the right combination of prevention and targeted action. By understanding the causes and implementing practical solutions, you can enjoy a comfortable, fly-free summer—even in urban settings.
