The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 are set to begin with a noticeably quieter atmosphere than the city's celebrated 2014 edition. As one merchandise stall worker admitted, sales have been slow, reflecting a broader lack of fanfare. Yet, for many Glaswegians, the return of the Games stirs fond memories and a sense of civic pride.
Why Glasgow Stepped In for the 2026 Commonwealth Games
When the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host due to rising costs, Glasgow offered to take over at short notice. Without this intervention, the 2026 Games would have been cancelled entirely. The city has worked hard to reopen key areas after a dramatic fire disrupted Glasgow Central station and the surrounding district.

Stripped-Back Scale and Budget
The 2026 edition is intentionally smaller. Only 10 sports will be staged (down from 17 in 2014), and just half a million tickets are available compared to 1.5 million last time. The budget is £150 million—less than a third of the £550 million spent in 2014. Funding comes from the Commonwealth Games Federation and commercial partners, plus compensation from Victoria.
| Metric | 2014 Games | 2026 Games |
|---|---|---|
| Number of Sports | 17 | 10 |
| Tickets Available | 1.5 million | 500,000 |
| Budget | £550 million | £150 million |
What Locals Are Saying
Many residents have positive recollections of 2014. Law student Joshua Lamb, who attended the swimming events as a child, said, “It’s nice when the city gets busy. Edinburgh gets all the credit normally, but it’s great here with the weather, it’s a nice vibe.” Others echoed the sentiment that Scotland is becoming a go‑to destination for international sports events.

Commemorative Merchandise and Atmosphere
