Hungary's president, Tamás Sulyok, has agreed to step down after signing a constitutional amendment that immediately ends his term, citing a serious loss of confidence from society. The move, driven by Prime Minister Péter Magyar's Tisza party, marks a pivotal shift in Hungary's political landscape following the ousting of former leader Viktor Orbán. This event raises critical questions about the rule of law and democratic stability in the nation.
Why Did Hungary's President Resign?
The amendment was passed by the ruling Tisza party, which holds a two-thirds majority in parliament, allowing it to change any laws. Sulyok, a former constitutional court judge elected in early 2024 by lawmakers from Orbán's Fidesz party, said he had no choice but to rubber-stamp the legislation as he respected the letter of the law. However, he warned that the reform had harmed the rule of law in Hungary, calling it a “watershed” that set a negative precedent.

The Impact on Hungary's Democracy
Sulyok stated: “The seventeenth amendment to the constitution has marked a watershed in Hungary’s constitutional democracy. By removing public office holders in a manner that openly violates the rule of law … it sets a negative precedent that inflicts a deep wound on the constitutional values of democracy, the separation of powers and the rule of law.” This sentiment echoes concerns from critics who say Orbán weakened democratic institutions during his 16 years in power.
Comparison of Political Shifts in Hungary
| Leader | Term Length | Reason for Exit | Impact on Rule of Law |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tamás Sulyok | Less than 1 year | Constitutional amendment | Negative precedent |
| Viktor Orbán | 16 years | Election defeat | Weakened institutions |
Key Takeaways From the Resignation

- Political fallout: Fidesz faces high-profile resignations and declining public support after its election defeat.
