Kyiv Under Siege: Russia's Escalating Attacks Disrupt Daily Life 2026

Kyiv is under siege as Russia ramps up attacks, disrupting daily life for millions. The escalating violence has forced residents to adapt to a new reality of constant danger and uncertainty.

Escalating Attacks Reshape Daily Routine

In the heart of Kyiv, the sound of air raid alerts has become a grim soundtrack to daily life. Valeriya Tkachenko, a lawyer, was dropping her son off at school when the alert sounded. She spent two hours in a shelter with her son, terrified for his safety. "I'm scared to death all day about what could happen to my son," she said. The previous day, a Russian drone had struck a school nearby. "And I can't plan anything any more," she added. "It's not sustainable like this."

Across the city, Artem Marchenko, an IT worker, had to abandon his car and walk 20 minutes across the Pivdennyi Bridge after repeated strikes damaged the crossing. He fears Russia will target Kyiv's other bridges, paralyzing movement across a city of 3 million people divided by the Dnipro River.
