High school math teacher Jake Johnson is running for a US House seat in Minnesota, emphasizing affordability and the role of government assistance in his own upbringing. Johnson, a Democrat, aims to unseat incumbent Republican Brad Finstad in a district that hasn't elected a Democrat since 2018.
Johnson's Background and Motivation
Growing up in Stewartville, Minnesota, Johnson's family relied on food stamps and Medicaid. His father worked as a garbage collector, and his mother read meters for the local gas company. Johnson credits Pell grants and Stafford loans for enabling his college education. “We were broke,” Johnson said. “I got to grow up living what I thought was an American dream, where you work hard and a lot of people invest in you.”

This personal experience drives his campaign, focusing on making life more affordable for working families. Johnson is a former member of the bargaining team and a government relations coordinator with Education Minnesota, the state’s teacher union.
Key Issues in the Campaign
Johnson is targeting affordability as a central issue, arguing that Trump's tariffs have caused a surge in prices, especially in the predominantly rural district. He claims the district is the ninth most agriculturally productive in the nation. Johnson also emphasizes the importance of teacher unions in improving public schools. “To me, a lot of the great things that happen in public schools happen because of unions. We’re the ones fighting for smaller class sizes. We’re the ones fighting for reasonable wages,” Johnson said.
Comparison of Candidate Positions

| Rural Economy | Focuses on agricultural productivity and worker protections | Promotes deregulation and free-market policies |
Union Advocacy and Labor Movement
Johnson is one of several Democratic candidates with a background in the labor movement. He has advocated for increased benefits for teachers and fought to prevent school closures through his union. The district is one of 44 across the country that Democrats say are “in play” in the midterms as the party seeks to gain a majority in Congress.
