The rise of mega-donors in UK politics is sparking urgent debate about whether MPs have the will to stop foreign interference. Recent revelations about a £5m donation from a Thailand-based cryptocurrency billionaire to Nigel Farage have intensified scrutiny on the role of big money in British democracy.
What the New Bill Proposes
The representation of the people bill, introduced by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, includes measures to extend voting rights to 16 and 17-year-olds and reform voter registration. However, the most contentious aspect is its handling of political donations from wealthy individuals and corporations.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham paused the bill to allow his administration to shape stronger regulations. This move comes after Guardian investigations exposed how mega-donations can bypass transparency rules, raising concerns about foreign influence in UK elections.
| Key Issue | Impact on Democracy |
|---|---|
| Unlimited donations from billionaires | Undermines equal representation |
| Lack of real-time disclosure | Hinders voter trust and oversight |
| Foreign-linked contributions | Risks national sovereignty |
Why Mega-Donors Are a Threat
Steve Goodrich of Transparency International warns that mega-donors can distort policy priorities. When a single individual contributes millions, their interests may overshadow the needs of ordinary citizens. This is especially dangerous when donations originate from opaque sources, such as cryptocurrency fortunes.
The Cryptocurrency Connection
The £5m gift from Christopher Harborne, a crypto billionaire, highlights how digital assets enable anonymous political funding. Unlike traditional bank transfers, cryptocurrency transactions can be harder to trace, creating loopholes in campaign finance laws.
- Mega-donors can buy access to decision-makers
- Current laws fail to cap individual contributions effectively
- Foreign-linked donations threaten electoral integrity
- Public trust in politics is at an all-time low
What Burnham Should Do
Experts recommend capping individual donations at £10,000 per year, requiring real-time disclosure of all contributions over £1,000, and banning foreign-linked donations entirely. The new prime minister has a historic opportunity to restore faith in British democracy.
