The MLS new commissioner faces a pivotal moment as Larry Berg prepares to take the helm in 2026. With a sprawling league and a self-proclaimed 'challenger brand' identity, the priorities for MLS's new commissioner will shape the next era of American soccer. From media deals to roster rules, here are the five key areas that demand immediate attention.
1. Chart a Broadcast Future Beyond Apple
The current streaming deal with Apple, which nets $250 million annually, expires after the 2028-29 season. The MLS broadcast strategy must evolve to maximize reach and revenue. While Apple brought innovation, viewership data remains scarce, and ancillary content has dwindled. The new commissioner must negotiate a deal that balances exclusivity with accessibility.

Evaluating Streaming vs. Traditional Networks
MLS's partnership with Apple was a gamble. Now, as the league looks ahead, it must weigh the benefits of a tech giant against the broader reach of traditional networks. The next agreement should include robust marketing and production commitments to grow the audience.
2. Revamp Roster Rules for Competitive Balance
Roster rules in MLS are notoriously complex, with salary caps, designated players, and allocation money. The MLS roster rules need simplification to attract top talent while maintaining parity. The new commissioner should prioritize a system that encourages investment in young players and international stars.
Key Areas for Roster Reform
- Simplify the designated player and U22 initiative rules.
- Increase spending limits to compete globally.
- Create incentives for homegrown player development.
3. Expand Fan Engagement and Viewership
With average viewership at 120,000 per game, there is significant room for growth. The MLS fan engagement strategy must leverage digital platforms, community events, and the 2026 World Cup momentum. The new commissioner should focus on making matches more accessible and exciting.
4. Strengthen League Infrastructure and Youth Development
Investing in academies and facilities is crucial for long-term success. The MLS youth development pipeline has produced stars like Alphonso Davies, but more needs to be done. Prioritize funding for coaching education, scouting networks, and partnerships with lower-division clubs.
5. Enhance Commercial Partnerships and Sponsorships
Beyond broadcast, the league must diversify revenue streams. MLS commercial partnerships should include jersey sponsorships, stadium naming rights, and international tours. The new commissioner has a unique opportunity to build a global brand.
Comparison of Broadcast Options
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Streaming | High revenue, innovation | Limited reach, low viewership |
| Traditional Networks | Wider audience, credibility | Lower per-game revenue |
| Hybrid Model | Balanced exposure | Complex negotiations |
Key Takeaways for the New Commissioner
- Secure a broadcast deal that balances revenue and reach.
- Simplify roster rules to attract global talent.
- Leverage the 2026 World Cup to boost fan engagement.
- Invest in youth development and infrastructure.
- Diversify commercial partnerships.
