The proposed removal of statutory governors from NHS trusts in England raises critical concerns about local scrutiny and accountability in healthcare. As a former health professional and governor, I urge the public to understand the implications of this centralising move.
The Role of NHS Trust Governors
Governors are elected volunteers who bring diverse experience to oversee trust decisions. They act as a bridge between the community and the board, ensuring that local needs are met. Their removal would silence informed voices that hold trusts accountable.

Why Local Scrutiny Is Essential
Local oversight prevents top-down mismanagement and ensures that health services respond to community needs. Without governors, a centralised Department of Health could prioritise political or commercial interests over patient care.
Risks of Abolishing Governors
- Reduced transparency in trust decision-making
- Loss of community representation in health services
- Increased risk of privatisation and shareholder influence
- Diminished checks on executive power
Comparison: Current vs. Proposed Oversight
| Aspect | Current System | Proposed System |
|---|---|---|
| Representation | Elected local governors | Appointed stakeholders |
| Scrutiny | Independent and public | Limited and centralised |
| Accountability | To the community | To the minister |
This shift could undermine the very essence of the NHS—public ownership and accountability.
Public Action Needed
Citizens must voice opposition to this change. Contact your MP, participate in consultations, and raise awareness about the value of local governors.
