Russian Strikes on Ukraine Use North Korean Missiles: Zelenskyy 2026

The latest Russian strikes on Ukraine have reportedly involved North Korean missiles, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, raising concerns about international involvement and the changing nature of warfare.

Zelenskyy's Claims and the Overnight Attacks

In his statement, Zelenskyy said that Zaporizhzhia "was struck with North Korean ballistic missiles, Zircons, and guided aerial bombs." He described it as a "vicious attack, calculated to inflict maximum damage." The overnight assault killed at least six people in Zaporizhzhia and injured 20 others, with additional casualties reported in Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk.

Ukraine's drone forces also confirmed successful strikes on a military base in Voronezh, an oil refinery in Orsk, a cargo ship in the Black Sea, and energy facilities in occupied territories. Meanwhile, Russia's defence ministry claimed its attacks targeted military-related logistics centers in Kyiv and a steelworks in Zaporizhzhia, asserting that these sites supported Ukraine's war effort.

North Korean Missiles: A New Dimension

The use of North Korean missiles, if confirmed, would represent a deepening of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. This could have significant implications for global security and the balance of power in the region. Experts suggest that such weapons, while potentially less accurate, could help Russia sustain its missile campaign despite Western sanctions.

Impact on Energy and Infrastructure

Beyond the immediate casualties, the strikes have also affected critical infrastructure. Romania's Cernavodă nuclear power plant is at risk of shutting down a second reactor due to falling Danube water levels, which hampers cooling operations. This follows the closure of the first reactor in late July. The Romanian government insists there will be no energy rationing, but imports will need to increase.

Ukraine's energy grid remains a prime target for Russian forces, with attacks aimed at disrupting power supply and demoralizing civilians. The resilience of Ukraine's energy sector will be crucial in the coming months as winter approaches.
