Solar Eclipse Colander Sales Surge 40%: UK Viewing Craze 2026

Solar eclipse colander sales jumped nearly 40% at John Lewis, as Britons found creative ways to view the celestial event. The partial solar eclipse, which obscured more than 90% of the sun, sparked a surge in kitchenware purchases and rental bike chaos across the UK.

Solar Eclipse Colander Sales Surge Across UK Retailers

Retailers reported remarkable spikes in colander sales as eclipse glasses sold out. John Lewis noted a 40% year-on-year increase, while Tesco saw stainless steel colander sales rise by over 130% week-on-week. Plastic versions also climbed 13%, according to company data.

The humble colander, with its perforated base, became an impromptu pinhole projector, allowing safe viewing of the partial eclipse. This DIY approach gained traction as protective eyewear became scarce, demonstrating British ingenuity during the astronomical event.

Retail Sales Data: Colander Demand During the Eclipse

Beyond retail, the eclipse created logistical challenges. Lime rental bikes were abandoned in piles near popular viewing spots like the Royal Observatory Greenwich and Calton Hill. The company deployed on-street teams to tidy up, while Manchester's Tandle Hill Tavern threatened to ban litterers after masses of rubbish were left behind.

How to View a Solar Eclipse Safely with a Colander

Using a colander as a pinhole projector is simple: hold it above a white surface, allowing sunlight to pass through the holes. The crescent shadows projected on the ground mirror the eclipse's progress. This method avoids direct eye contact, making it a safe alternative when certified glasses are unavailable.
