South Carolina Senate Race: Graham Successor Primary Vote 2026

The South Carolina Senate race to replace the late Lindsey Graham has entered its final stretch, with a fiercely competitive special primary election set for Tuesday. Ten candidates are vying for the Republican nomination, compressing a year of campaigning into just two weeks. The winner will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November, making this a critical test of the state's political mood.

Key Candidates and the Tight Timeline

The sudden death of Lindsey Graham on 11 July triggered an unusual political scramble. Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham's sister, Darline Graham, as interim senator, and she is now on the ballot. Other prominent contenders include Representative Russell Fry, former Governor Mark Sanford, and Representative Ralph Norman. The compressed schedule means candidates are hitting diners, church halls, and recreation centers across the state, hoping to connect with voters personally.

South Carolina's political culture values direct engagement. As longtime activist Eaddy Roe Willard noted, voters often want to shake a candidate's hand at least three times before deciding. This local, retail style of politics is on full display, with events like Russell Fry's stop at Savage Craft Ale Works and Darline Graham's morning at Lizard's Thicket.

What to Expect: Runoff Likely

With ten candidates in the field, polling suggests no one will secure an outright majority. If that holds, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on 25 August. This adds another layer of intensity, as candidates must balance immediate voter appeal with long-term coalition building. The winner of the primary will face Annie Andrews, a pediatrician and the Democratic nominee, in the November general election.

Why This Race Matters

The outcome will shape South Carolina's representation in the Senate for years. A Republican win in November is likely, given the state's conservative lean, but the primary will signal which faction of the party holds sway. Darline Graham's candidacy, backed by Donald Trump, represents continuity, while challengers like Sanford offer a more independent voice.

The special election also tests the state's ability to run a fair and efficient process under extreme time pressure. Election officials are working overtime to ensure every vote counts, with early voting and absentee options expanding. The result will be closely watched as a barometer for the 2026 midterms.
