The Alaska Native games are experiencing a powerful revival through the World Eskimo Indian Olympics (WEIO), where ancient traditions like the two-foot high kick and knuckle hop showcase survival skills turned into competitive sports. This annual event in Fairbanks, Alaska, draws Indigenous athletes from across the Arctic region.
What Are the Arctic Games?
Traditional Arctic sports originated from Alaska, Greenland, Siberia, and Canada, designed to build endurance, strength, and survival skills needed for life in the tundra. Games like the two-foot high kick were historically used for long-distance communication—messengers would kick both feet in the air to signal a successful whale hunt.
