Flock Surveillance Cameras Pose Crash Risks for Drivers 2026

Flock surveillance cameras, widely used for automated license plate reading, are now being flagged as potential crash risks for drivers. Safety advocates and experts warn that the physical placement and design of these cameras can create roadside hazards, especially on narrow rural roads. This article examines the evidence, safety standards, and what it means for motorists.

Why Flock Cameras Are a Roadside Hazard

Flock Safety cameras are mounted on metal poles that often lack breakaway plates—a critical safety feature designed to snap upon impact, reducing collision force. Without these plates, a vehicle striking the pole can suffer severe damage and increased injury risk. Additionally, the cameras are painted black, making them difficult to spot, especially at dusk or in poor lighting conditions.

Placement is another concern. In Greene County, Ohio, a Flock camera was installed just two feet from the edge of a travel lane, violating the Ohio Department of Transportation's requirement of at least eight feet for uncurbed roads. This close proximity leaves little room for driver error, especially on curves or hills.

Safety Standards and Violations

According to the Federal Highway Administration, roadside hardware should meet specific crashworthiness criteria, including breakaway designs for non-impactable objects. Many Flock installations, however, have not been certified for compliance. Local police departments often defer responsibility to Flock, but the company has not publicly confirmed adherence to all state and federal guidelines.

Expert and Victim Perspectives

Steve Eimers, known as the Guardrail Guy, has documented multiple Flock camera poles after his daughter died in a crash involving a roadside structure. He argues that these poles are not just surveillance tools but potential death traps. "If a driver veers off the road for any reason, hitting a rigid pole without a breakaway is like hitting a tree," he says.

Safety advocates call for immediate audits of all Flock installations. They recommend that cameras be placed on existing infrastructure like light poles or that breakaway mounts be retrofitted. Until then, they warn drivers to be extra cautious in areas with these cameras.

Key Takeaways for Drivers

• Flock cameras may be placed too close to roads, increasing crash severity.
• Lack of breakaway plates means poles won't yield on impact.
• Dark-colored cameras are hard to see, especially at night.
• Report any unsafe camera placement to local authorities.
• Stay alert and reduce speed on roads with known surveillance poles.

Frequently Asked Questions

As Flock Safety expands its network to over 100,000 cameras, the urgency for safety compliance grows. Drivers deserve roads free of hidden hazards, and surveillance should not come at the cost of public safety. Stay informed, drive cautiously, and advocate for proper safety standards in your community.
