The 2026 World Cup was a tournament defined by spectacle, scandal, and compromise, leaving fans and analysts questioning the future of global football. As the gold tape settles in New Jersey, the events that unfolded—from the Balogun Affair to political pressure on FIFA—demand a closer look at how revenue and celebrity influence are reshaping the sport.
The Balogun Affair: A Milestone in Precedent
Perhaps the most controversial moment was the bending of 64 years of precedent to allow a specific player to take the stage. Gianni Infantino’s involvement mirrored his earlier moves with Cristiano Ronaldo and gerrymandering qualification criteria for the Club World Cup to include Lionel Messi. Critics argue this prioritizes money over justice, setting a dangerous precedent.

Political Pressure and Revenue Generation
The tournament saw British and American politicians openly criticizing FIFA and its president. Meanwhile, US and Canadian immigration policies undermined Infantino’s claims of championing the global south. An immediate consequence could be an expansion of the World Cup to 64 teams, further diluting competition for revenue.

|---|---|---|
