Enzo Maresca faces the monumental task of following Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager, acknowledging the difficulty of replacing a legend. In his first press conference, the 46-year-old Italian referenced the struggles of successors to Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger, signaling he understands the weight of expectation.
Maresca’s Road to Manchester City
Maresca previously led City’s elite development squad in 2020-21 and served as Guardiola’s assistant during the treble-winning 2022-23 season. His return as head coach was greeted with a “Welcome back Enzo” billboard, but he knows goodwill fades quickly if results falter.

Comparing Succession Challenges
History shows that following a long‑tenured manager is fraught with peril. Manchester City have had only three managers in 17 years: Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Pep Guardiola. Maresca is now the fourth, aiming to extend that stability.
| Manager | Years at City | Major Trophies |
|---|---|---|
| Roberto Mancini | 2009‑2013 | 1 Premier League, 1 FA Cup |
| Manuel Pellegrini | 2013‑2016 | 1 Premier League, 2 League Cups |
| Pep Guardiola | 2016‑2026 | 6 Premier League, 4 League Cups, 1 Champions League |
| Enzo Maresca | 2026‑present | 0 (so far) |
Key Challenges Ahead
Maresca must navigate high fan expectations, maintain a winning culture, and possibly overhaul a squad built by Guardiola. His tactical philosophy—honed under Guardiola—will be tested immediately.
- Replacing a generational coach with 20 trophies in 10 years
- Keeping star players motivated and aligned
- Adapting to the relentless pressure of the Premier League
- Winning over sceptical supporters
FAQ
What makes Enzo Maresca different from Pep Guardiola?
Maresca shares Guardiola’s possession‑based philosophy but brings a fresher perspective and his own man‑management style, learned from years as an assistant and youth coach.
How long is Maresca’s contract?
Details have not been officially confirmed, but reports suggest a three‑year deal with an option for a fourth, giving him time to build his own legacy.
Can Maresca succeed where others failed after long‑serving managers?
It’s a tough precedent—David Moyes after Ferguson, Unai Emery after Wenger. However, City’s strong infrastructure and deep squad give Maresca a better platform than most successors have enjoyed.
In his opening remarks, Maresca offered a heartfelt tribute to Kevin Keegan, the former City manager who passed away on Monday. That gesture showed his emotional intelligence, a quality that may prove as vital as tactical acumen in the months ahead.
Only time will tell whether Maresca can carve his own path, but his acknowledgment of the “elephant in the room” suggests he is ready to embrace the challenge. For City fans, the post‑Pep era has begun.
