Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended official Michael Caruso over child sexual abuse charges, a case that has sent shockwaves through the state's political circles. Caruso, the former clerk of court and comptroller for Palm Beach County, was arrested on five felony counts, including kidnapping, child molestation, and lewd exhibition. The suspension was announced shortly after his arrest, with DeSantis calling it an easy decision.
Background of the Case
Michael Caruso, a 67-year-old married father of seven, served as a Republican state representative from 2018 until last year. He was a vocal supporter of a 2023 law signed by DeSantis that allowed the death penalty for anyone convicted of sexual battery against a child under 12. DeSantis had previously praised Caruso as "a legend" for his hardline legislative stance.
