Giordano Marina Album Review: Unsung Opera Resurrected 2026

Giordano's Marina album review highlights a fascinating resurrection of an unsung early opera, offering a rare glimpse into the composer's formative genius. This 2026 recording, captured at the belated world premiere in Milan, reveals a young Umberto Giordano with a keen ear for musical color, even if the work never reaches the heights of his later masterpieces.

Giordano Marina: A Lost Opera Finally Heard

In 1888, a 21-year-old Giordano entered the one-act opera competition that would famously be won by Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana. Marina came sixth, and its score languished in obscurity for over a century. Now, thanks to this premiere recording, audiences can experience the work that foreshadowed the verismo movement.

The opera is set in Montenegro during an unspecified conflict with Serbia. When Marina, a Montenegrin woman, takes in Giorgio, a wounded Serb soldier, the inevitable clash with her brother and her bullish suitor leads to a typical verismo catastrophe. The plot is simple, but Giordano's musical instincts shine through.

Musical Highlights and Dramatic Structure

The opera opens with a militaristic flourish, but soon Marina takes center stage with an aching ballad of lost opportunity. Her scene with the injured Giorgio follows abruptly, yet is redeemed by Giordano's knack for crafting appealing melodies. While not the most sophisticated writing, it comes straight from the heart.

One standout is a drinking song that echoes Verdi's Otello, and a patriotic Montenegrin ditty that, alongside a brief aria for Giorgio, serves as the show's hit. The scene between Marina and her brother is decently judged, though the one-act format limits character development.

Performance and Recording Quality

Eleonora Buratto is treasurable as Marina, her bright soprano thrilling at the top of its range. Freddie De Tommaso proves a classy verismo hero as Giorgio, his voice dark yet suitably Italianate. The Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali plays with supple security under the idiomatic baton of Vincenzo Milletarì.
