Harry and Meghan's UK Return: Key Conflicts and Controversies 2026

Harry and Meghan's return to the UK marks a significant chapter in their ongoing saga with the royal family. After six years in California, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly relocating to Britain, a move that reignites long-standing tensions with King Charles III and the Prince and Princess of Wales. This timeline chronicles the key moments, conflicts, and controversies since their dramatic departure from royal duties in 2020.

The Sussexes' Move to the US: A Timeline of Tensions

In January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their intention to step back as senior royals, citing a desire for financial independence and privacy. The decision followed years of intense media scrutiny and alleged bullying. By June, they had settled in Montecito, California, purchasing a sprawling 16-bedroom estate for $14.7 million. Their new life in the US, however, did not shield them from royal drama.

2020: Stepping Back and Relocating

The couple's initial announcement was met with mixed reactions. While some praised their courage, others criticized the timing, especially given the Queen's advancing age. The move to California solidified their independence but also created a physical and emotional distance from the royal family. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, were born into this new reality, with Lilibet named after the Queen's childhood nickname.

2021: The Oprah Interview and Its Fallout

In March 2021, Harry and Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey in a bombshell interview. Meghan accused the royal family of racism, claiming concerns were raised about Archie's skin tone before his birth. She also revealed struggles with suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy. The interview sent shockwaves through the monarchy, prompting a rare statement from Queen Elizabeth II acknowledging the seriousness of the issues while noting that recollections may vary.

2022: Legal Battles and Family Strains

Following the interview, Harry filed a lawsuit against the Home Office over security arrangements in the UK. This legal action further strained relations. The couple also faced criticism for their commercial ventures, including deals with Netflix and Spotify, which some saw as profiting from royal connections. Meanwhile, the Queen's passing in September 2022 brought a temporary truce, but underlying tensions remained.
