Ireland's President Catherine Connolly is set to meet Donald Trump in Dublin, a high-stakes encounter that has the nation on edge. Trump arrives Saturday for a two-day visit focused on golf, but protocol demands a courtesy call at Áras an Uachtaráin, the presidential residence. The meeting between the leftwing president and the controversial US leader is generating intense media buzz and government anxiety.

Who is Catherine Connolly?

Catherine Connolly, a former independent leftwing MP for Galway, became Ireland's president last year. She has a history of protesting against Trump, including his 2019 visit, and has called him "abhorrent" and an "abuser of power." The Upcoming Meeting: What to Expect

The encounter is fraught with tension. Trump's sole previous comment on Connolly suggested he thought she was a man. Now, as they prepare to meet, many in Ireland are divided: some hope Connolly will confront Trump on his rhetoric, while others fear economic repercussions if she does. The government is on tenterhooks, with one official saying, "We need to get him in the Áras, then out of the Áras. We'll breathe easier after."
