JD Vance Memoir Sparks Quiet Reaction in His Ohio Hometown 2026

JD Vance's memoir 'Communion' has sparked quiet reactions in his Ohio hometown, with library demand and local officials' comments revealing a complex reception. The book, released nearly two months ago, sold 64,000 copies in its first week, yet in Middletown, Ohio, the public response remains subdued.

Library Demand for Vance's Memoir

At the MidPointe Library System, which serves Middletown, Vance's memoir has become a popular item. According to Cari Hillman, the book has been the No. 2 adult nonfiction title since June 9, trailing only Mel Robbins's 'The Let Them Theory' from 2024. The library system, with five branches and a bookmobile, holds 20 copies; as of July 27, 11 were checked out.

This data highlights that while the memoir has found an audience, it hasn't dominated the local reading scene. The library's interest suggests a moderate curiosity among residents, but not an overwhelming surge.

Local Reactions and Political Context

Joe Mulligan, a Republican city council member, admitted he hasn't read the book yet but plans to 'soon.' He noted that there are no current city plans to mark its publication, but he sees potential for faith communities to engage with its themes. Mulligan, a practicing Catholic, admires Vance's life story, emphasizing how Middletown's job opportunities helped his grandfather escape poverty and how Vance worked at Dillman Foods as a youth.

Vance is considered a frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, and memoirs are a common pre-campaign strategy. However, on Middletown's streets, many residents are hesitant to share their opinions on Vance or his writings, reflecting a cautious atmosphere.

Faith and Community Impact

Mulligan suggested that the book 'could be an opportunity for the city's churches and faith communities to discuss the role that faith and communion with our neighbors can help build up each other and to work together.' This aligns with the memoir's focus on Vance's return to faith, a theme that resonates with some local religious groups.

Despite the political significance, the general public's engagement appears limited. The library's popularity ranking shows interest, but the lack of public discourse suggests a wait-and-see attitude.
