Jon Stewart recently delivered a scathing critique of the advanced age of Congress, declaring, "This is not right, the stakes are too high." On The Daily Show, Stewart addressed the death of Senator Lindsey Graham and the broader issue of an aging U.S. government that feels increasingly out of touch. He questioned why Americans tolerate such "national frailty" in their lawmakers, especially as Congress becomes one of the least productive in history.
Jon Stewart's Take on Elderly Lawmakers
Stewart highlighted the irony of Donald Trump's response to Graham's death, playing clips where Trump joked about ignoring Graham's calls. "It takes a lot of balls for Donald Trump to gently roast someone for yapping too much," Stewart quipped. He also mocked Trump's eulogy style, comparing it to a pizza review: "My favorite part of any eulogy is when they announce the person's life score."

The host expressed shock that Graham died before Mitch McConnell, given McConnell's more publicized health issues. "How the fuck is that possible?" Stewart exclaimed, pointing to a viral photo of McConnell as the "happiest boy in the hospital." He noted that Graham is the sixth member of Congress to die this term, calling it a crisis that would shut down any other industry.
The Stakes of an Aging Congress
Stewart criticized the system for rewarding incumbency, saying, "These people aren’t brilliant, they’re fucking barnacles." He argued that Congress is "falling apart due to a lack of not just political will but bone density." The comedian urged viewers to consider the consequences of having lawmakers who are physically and mentally declining while making decisions on critical issues like Middle East peace and national security.
