Santi Denia Praises Anthony Gordon's Elite Talent Level 2026

Santi Denia, the Czechia coach, has heaped praise on Anthony Gordon, comparing the England winger to Spain's Lamine Yamal. Speaking after his side's 2-0 defeat by England in Prague, Denia said: "Anthony Gordon? What a player! He’s at the same level as Lamine Yamal." This bold comparison highlights Gordon's rising status in international football.

Denia's Surprising Comparison

Denia, who spent 15 years coaching Spain's youth teams, knows talent when he sees it. Having worked with Lamine Yamal in Spain's youth setup, he believes Gordon possesses similar qualities. "He's explosive, direct, and has that rare ability to change a game in an instant," Denia added. The Czechia coach's comments came after Gordon impressed in England's victory, tormenting the Czech defence with his pace and trickery.

Gordon vs Yamal: A Statistical Look

While direct comparisons are always tricky, here's how the two wingers stack up in key metrics over the past year:

While Yamal's numbers are slightly superior, Gordon's development curve suggests he could reach similar heights. At 24, he is four years older than Yamal but has shown remarkable improvement since joining Newcastle United.

Denia's Dual Connection

Denia's unique position—having coached Spain's youth teams and now managing Czechia—gives him a rare perspective. "I've seen many young players grow, but Anthony's work ethic and intelligence on the pitch are exceptional," he said. Denia's team faced Spain in Oviedo before taking on England at Wembley, a challenging sequence that has tested his squad's depth.

The Challenge of International Management

Denia also spoke about the gruelling schedule: "Four matches in 11 days, no time to train, for anything; I haven’t heard a single national coach say they like the new setup." Despite the difficulties, he remains optimistic about Czechia's progress and the opportunity to test his players against top nations.

Key Takeaways

• Denia's praise signals Gordon's emergence as a top-tier international winger.
• Comparison to Yamal puts Gordon in elite company, though stats show room for growth.
• Denia's background with Spain's youth teams lends weight to his assessment.

What This Means for Gordon's Future

Gordon's performances for England have caught the eye, and praise from a coach of Denia's calibre will only boost his confidence. With Euro 2024 on the horizon, he is cementing his place in Gareth Southgate's plans. If he continues his upward trajectory, comparisons to Yamal may become more frequent.
