Donald Trump will address a rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Friday, three months after an armed assailant attempted to storm the original event. The decision to restage the dinner has sparked a fierce debate over press freedom and hypocrisy, with critics accusing the president of undermining the First Amendment while appearing at a celebration of it.
Trump’s Defiance and the Rescheduled Dinner
The venue was moved from the Washington Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria, formerly the Trump International hotel, after the original event was abruptly halted. Organizers and Trump himself frame the appearance as an act of defiance, reaffirming the principles of free speech. Weijia Jiang, the WCHA’s president, called it “a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence.”

Criticism from Press Freedom Groups
A letter signed by 520 journalists and eight media campaign groups—including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists—condemns the dinner as “hypocritical.” They point to subpoenas demanding phone records of New York Times journalists and their relatives, and Trump’s threats to revoke broadcast licenses. The letter urges the WHCA to condemn the administration’s actions from the podium and pledge to fight attacks on the First Amendment.
