Will Poulter's Union County is a groundbreaking opioid drama that challenges the stigma surrounding addiction. The film, directed by Adam Meeks, offers a raw and poetic look at a real-life drug recovery court in rural Ohio, where Poulter plays Cody, a young man struggling with self-worth and addiction. By blending narrative storytelling with documentary elements, Union County redefines how Hollywood portrays substance abuse.
Why Union County Stands Out in Opioid Cinema
Unlike typical addiction films that focus on devastation, Union County emphasizes the human side of recovery. Poulter's performance is anchored in authenticity, as he worked closely with real participants from the Bellefontaine recovery court. The film's hybrid approach allows first-time actors to share their own stories, creating a deeply affecting experience that resonates with audiences.

The Power of Community-Driven Storytelling
Director Adam Meeks, an Ohio native, prioritized collaboration over exploitation. As Poulter noted, "Adam wasn't interested in making a film about a community as he was in making it with a community." This approach ensured that the recovery process was never interfered with, and the participants' generosity shines through. The result is a film that feels both intimate and universal.
Breaking Stereotypes in Addiction Representation
Hollywood has often misfired with addiction stories like Beautiful Boy and Hillbilly Elegy, but Union County takes a different path. It challenges the notion that addicts are beyond help, instead showing that recovery is possible with the right support. Poulter's character, Cody, embodies this struggle—his self-respect is in the basement, yet he takes the first step toward change.
