The climate crisis was absent from nearly three-quarters of UK media reports on the record-breaking June heatwave, according to a new analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU). With temperatures topping 37°C, over 2,500 articles appeared in nine major national daily publications, yet 72% omitted any mention of global heating or climate change.
Why the Climate Crisis Link Matters in Heatwave Reporting
Scientists from Imperial College London found that approximately 2,700 people died from overheating in the UK during May and June, with 1,100 of those deaths directly attributable to the additional heat caused by the climate crisis. The extreme weather would not have been possible without human interference, primarily from burning fossil fuels and intensive agriculture.

Media Coverage Gaps Exposed
Less than one in 20 heatwave stories mentioned net zero policies or government climate actions. Professor Ed Hawkins of the University of Reading emphasized that the public needs the media to explain how greenhouse gas emissions make heatwaves hotter and more dangerous.
| Publication Type | Articles on Heatwave | Mentioned Climate Crisis | Mentioned Net Zero |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broadsheet | 1,200 | 420 | 60 |
| Tabloid | 1,300 | 260 | 30 |
| Total | 2,500 | 680 | 90 |
Key Takeaways from the Analysis
- 72% of UK heatwave articles ignored the climate crisis entirely.
- Only 4% of stories referenced net zero or government climate policies.
- Human-caused climate change made the June heatwave hotter and more deadly.
- Attribution studies confirm extreme heat would not have occurred without fossil fuel emissions.
How to Stay Informed About Climate and Energy
Understanding the connection between extreme weather and the climate crisis is essential for making informed decisions. Consumers can reduce their carbon footprint by choosing energy-efficient appliances and sustainable products.
FAQ
Why did most UK media avoid mentioning the climate crisis in heatwave reports?
Analysis suggests editorial decisions, lack of climate expertise, and perceived audience disinterest may have contributed. However, scientists stress that omitting the climate link misleads the public about the true causes of extreme weather.
How does the climate crisis affect UK heatwaves?
Greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels trap heat, making heatwaves hotter, longer, and more frequent. Attribution studies show that without human-caused climate change, June's record temperatures would not have occurred.
What can individuals do to address the climate crisis?
Individuals can reduce energy consumption, support renewable energy, and choose sustainable products. Every action counts toward lowering emissions and mitigating future heatwaves.
